The Need for Advanced Agricultural Extension

Agricultural extension functionaries have always been pivotal in transferring crop production technologies to farmers. However, with the evolving needs of the agricultural sector, there is an urgent need for a more effective extension system that integrates advanced modern tools and technologies. The challenge lies in managing this transformation, ensuring farmers have access to the latest information, services, and professional guidance.

Aligned with the Ministry of Agriculture’s vision, the New Extensionist Program aims to bridge the gap between farmers and modern agricultural technologies. By empowering local youth to become Agri-Entrepreneurs (AEs), this program ensures that farmers can easily access the technologies and innovations they need to improve their yields and income. The program addresses the critical issue of inadequate ‘first mile access’ to farmers or, from the suppliers’ perspective, ‘last mile delivery.’

How the Program Works

The New Extensionist Program selects and trains local youth to become Agri-Entrepreneurs (AEs). These AEs are responsible for providing products and services to smallholders across 2-3 villages. Beyond selling new technologies and products, AEs also offer crop advisory services, which are crucial for improving crop yields and the overall income of smallholder farmers.

Impact and Goals

Transforming Agriculture One Village at a Time

The New Extensionist Program is not just about introducing new technologies; it’s about fostering a deep-rooted change in how agriculture is practiced at the grassroots level. By training and empowering local youth to become Agri-Entrepreneurs, the program creates a sustainable and scalable model that ensures every village has access to essential agricultural innovations and expertise.

These Agri-Entrepreneurs serve as vital links between smallholder farmers and the latest advancements in agriculture, ensuring that even the most remote communities are not left behind. By providing tailored crop advisory services, cutting-edge technologies, and access to high-quality inputs, Agri-Entrepreneurs are driving a significant increase in productivity and income for smallholder farmers.

The program envisions a future where:

  • Knowledge is Accessible: Every farmer, regardless of their location, has access to the information and tools needed to succeed.
  • Productivity is Enhanced: Farmers can achieve higher yields through the adoption of best practices and advanced technologies.
  • Income is Increased: By connecting farmers with better markets and improving crop quality, the program helps elevate the economic status of smallholder farmers.
  • Communities are Empowered: Local youth, trained as Agri-Entrepreneurs, become change agents in their communities, driving economic growth and sustainable development.
