Backyard Poultry Project (BYP) in Mayurbhanj District, Odisha

Objective

To design and develop a sustainable Backyard Poultry (BYP) model tailored for marginal farmers in Mayurbhanj District, Odisha.

Focus Areas

Improved Poultry Management Practices: Implementing advanced and efficient poultry management techniques to enhance productivity and ensure the well-being of the poultry.

Business Plan Recommendations: Developing a practical and viable business plan that supports long-term sustainability and profitability for farmers.

Standard Flock Size: Establishing optimal flock sizes to achieve dignified and consistent income for the farmers.

Resource Efficiency and Scalability: Ensuring that the BYP model is resource-efficient and scalable, providing a framework that can be expanded to other regions and communities.

Outcome

Value Chain Model: Creation of a comprehensive value chain model for poultry management that operates at community, enterprise, and institutional levels.

Income Augmentation: Smallholder poultry farming is projected to increase family income by ₹10,000 to ₹15,000 annually. This represents a 50-75% increase in annual income, enabling families to become net surplus and invest in land, education, health, and other areas.

Employment Opportunities: Each Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) generates 25-50 sustainable job opportunities for rural youth, including roles as technical supervisors and FPO staff.

Producer Engagement: The project involves 1,500 to 2,500 producers, with a significant proportion being women, thus enhancing women’s economic empowerment.

Model Replication: Successful replication of the Community Agro-vet Entrepreneurs (CAVE) Model to further support and scale up poultry management practices.

GIZ - Medicinal and Aromatic Plants in Bundelkhand, Uttar Pradesh

Objective

Strengthen the value chain for medicinal and aromatic plants to support climate adaptation and livelihood diversification.

Target Area

3000 acres across seven districts: Chitrakoot, Jhansi, Lalitpur, Banda, Hamirpur, Mahoba, and Jalaun.

Expected Outcomes

Consolidated income of Rs. 2.11 lakh per producer in three years.

Average annual income of Rs. 70k by the end of the third year.

Established market linkages and access to new markets.
